Embers of Ardan
★★★★★ 4.7
Embers of Ardan is the kind of RPG I came to this site to find. The story opens slow, following a burned-out mercenary who keeps getting dragged back into other people's problems, but by the second act the writing has real teeth. Companions argue, change their minds, and occasionally leave if you push them too far.
Combat is turn-based with a positioning twist: where your characters stand on a small grid changes what skills can reach. It rewards planning without demanding a spreadsheet. Progression comes from a skill web rather than flat levels, so builds actually diverge.
My one gripe is that later dungeons reuse a few layouts. Still, the momentum of the story carried me through. This is a commitment, not a snack, and I mean that as praise.
What we liked
- Writing that gets sharper as it goes
- Grid positioning adds real tactics
- Branching skill web instead of grind
